I've stuck with this color scheme for my 00 UTC upper air and surface maps:
1.) Black is either height or pressure. Fronts and significant boundaries are drawn in black. On the 300 and 700 mb charts I drew in black streamlines because I got tired of contouring heights.
2.) Green indicates moisture either by dewpoint depression or by dewpoint. In some places I've circled the dewpoint 12 hour tendency if it was large and moistening.
3.) Solid red or dashed red indicates isotherms.
4.) For the 500 mb chart, purple indicates 12-hr height falls, orange indicates 12-hr height rises (every 30 meters).
5.) 850 mb charts have streamlines drawn in purple. Grey shading indicates elevated terrain, and contours should not be trusted in that area.
6.) Blue scallops on the surface map is a rough estimation of where the cloud cover is.

Interpreting the UA Maps:

These maps provide 8 different types of data at the UA stations.
Observations:
1.) Upper left (black) - geopotential height in meters (truncated)
2.) Middle left (red) - temperature in Celsius.
3.) Lower left (green) - dewpoint in Celsius.
4.) Winds in knots

The geopotential height numbers are truncated differently for different maps.
925 mb - (meters, no numbers needed to be added)
850 mb - (meters, but add a 1 to the front of the number)
700 mb - (meters, but add a 3 to the front of the number)
500 mb - (meters, but add a 0 to the end of the number)
300 mb - (meters, but add a 0 to the end of the number)

12 Hour Tendencies:
1.) Upper right (+ [rises], red | - [falls], blue) - geopotential height tendency (decameters)
2.) Middle right (+ [warming], red | - [cooling], blue) - temperature tendency (Celsius)
3.) Lower right (+ [moistening], green | - [drying], orange) - dewpoint tendency (Celsius)

Lift:
1.) Dewpoint depression in bold at the top if the dewpoint depression <= 5 Celsius.
